The subject of this research examines the doctrine of utilitarianism as articulated by Jeremy Bentham, who is considered the most prominent pioneer of this school of thought. In the introduction, we presented a brief overview of the early beginnings of utilitarianism's emergence at the hands of the English philosopher Francis Bacon, and we also addressed the fundamental idea of utilitarianism. However, our focus will be limited to the philosopher Jeremy Bentham as the central figure of this research.
This research also explores the primary sources upon which Jeremy Bentham relied in establishing his doctrine, as well as the most significant contributions of Jeremy Bentham to utilitarianism, given his crucial importance in founding this school of thought along with other advocates of utilitarianism.
Accordingly, this research will answer several questions, the most important of which are: What are the sources of Bentham's doctrine of utility? What are the contributions he made to this doctrine? How did Bentham reconcile the interests of the individual and the collective? In addition to the foundations upon which his ethical theory is based. These questions and others will be the focus of our modest research.
