Abstract

This research presents a comparative study of the most prominent figures of the Kufic school of Arabic grammar, Imam Al-Kisa'i and his student Al-Farra'. The researcher aims to elucidate the distinctive characteristics of their grammatical terms in terms of origin, development, and meaning, while tracing their origins and comparing them with Basran terminology.

The research also highlights the importance of studying grammatical terminology as a tool for understanding linguistic rules and a means of preserving the identity of the Arabic language. It further discusses contemporary difficulties in understanding these terms due to their variation and the weak connection with the heritage.

The applied aspect included an analysis of a number of terms used by Al-Kisa'i and Al-Farra', such as: ma lam yusamma fa'iluhu (that whose doer is not named), la al-bara'a (the la of exoneration), al-makni (the implied), al-umad (the pillars), and others, clarifying the differences in usage between them and the Basran grammarians. The research showed that the Kufians were characterized by linguistic flexibility and innovation in terminology, with a tendency towards multiple terms for a single meaning.

The study concluded that grammatical terminology went through stages of development until it stabilized, and that it reflects the evolution of Arabic grammatical thought and the variation among its schools. It also emphasized the importance of unifying terminology to ensure conceptual clarity and precision in scientific research.
