Abstract

This research aims to identify the reasons why faculty members at the College of Physical Education, Elmergib University, specializing in sports training, do not engage in the profession of sports coaching. The descriptive method was used in this research, and the research sample was selected purposively. The sample consisted of (13) faculty members from the Department of Sports Training at the College of Physical Education, Elmergib University, due to their academic qualifications in sports training and their potential for success if other requirements were met. The study was conducted from October 15, 2025, to October 17, 2025. Questionnaires were distributed at the Department of Sports Training within the college. The data collection method was a questionnaire developed by the researcher with an open-ended question: "What are the reasons for the lack of engagement of faculty members in the Department of Sports Training in the profession of sports coaching?"

The research concluded that some sports club administrations do not give the scientifically qualified the appropriate material and moral appreciation for them, and they feel uncomfortable with the experiences of colleagues with some sports clubs, which makes them very hesitant to engage in the profession of sports coaching, as well as not continuing to work in the profession. They see that the university teaching profession makes them not need to work in the field of sports training, and that working in the coaching profession does not generate an income sufficient to bear the burdens of life in Libya. They are financially comfortable and do not need the coaching profession to increase the financial income, and they believe that the material and moral incentives are not sufficient to engage in the profession of sports coaching. They believe that scientific qualification alone is not enough to succeed in the profession of coaching, but rather talent, knowledge and some special abilities are also required. The research results also confirmed that the exclusion of the scientifically qualified from coaching without clear reasons and the difference in work ideas adopted by some sports administrations are not in line with the scientific qualification of the research sample. In light of the research findings, the researcher recommends the necessity of utilizing the faculty members of physical education colleges in Libya in areas other than sports training, given their scientific and academic capabilities that make them more useful in the field of preparing and qualifying training personnel in various sports disciplines. He also recommends raising awareness among sports administrations about the need to adopt teamwork ideas, provide real opportunities for coaches, give them sufficient time to implement their ideas, address shortcomings, create an environment conducive to their success, and overcome obstacles. Furthermore, he hopes for cooperation between authorities, federations, academies, and club administrations with faculty members specializing in sports training at physical education colleges in Libya to develop general strategies and plans for sports training processes. These processes begin with selecting young talents and end with creating a sports champion, and may require a relatively long period of time depending on the type of sport practiced, the requirements for success, their availability, and the specific abilities of athletes in various aspects.
